Synopses and clever reply choices may not be the most striking features of Apple Knowledge, but these are functions that Apple is presenting in iOS 18.1 which have the capacity to be advantageous for the majority of individuals’ everyday device use.

Synopses are accessible throughout the operating system and can be utilized in various manners for apps, alerts, emails, and more.

Email and Messages

Within your email inbox in the Mail app, you will encounter an AI synopsis of the primary content of the email to quickly gauge its importance. Though it doesn’t provide extensive details, it offers enough context when the subject line is vague. By selecting an email, you can utilize the “Summarize” function at the top to obtain an overview.

On the Lock Screen, brief summaries of incoming messages are displayed to help you decide if a response is necessary. This proves particularly beneficial for lengthy messages as it effectively highlights key points. Furthermore, unread message summaries are visible within the Messages app.

To deactivate Messages summaries, navigate to Settings > Apps > Messages and disable Summarize Messages. Similarly, disable Mail summaries in the Mail section following the same process.

Alerts

Apple Knowledge can consolidate the majority of your notifications and provide a concise, one-sentence summary of their contents. Tapping expands the stack for individual viewing.

Notification synopses function for native apps like Messages as well as third-party apps. The system attempts to emphasize the most pertinent information. In the case of messaging or email apps, it offers a brief summary of one or two messages, while notifications for activities like camera motion are grouped together, enabling you to quickly identify the areas with motion activations.

Automatic notification summaries can be disabled by entering the Settings app, proceeding to Notifications, and switching off Summarize Previews. The feature can be deactivated globally or for specific apps.

Safari

Safari incorporates a new Apple Knowledge Summary feature that provides an outline of webpages or articles. A purple sparkle on the URL bar indicates the availability of a summary upon tapping.

Summaries functionally belong to Reader Mode, but accessing a summary doesn’t always necessitate entering Reader Mode. Summaries are automatically generated for lengthy articles; however, if not visible, enter Reader Mode and click on the Summarize button.

Within Safari, you can highlight any text, access Writing Tools, and opt for Summary to generate a brief overview of the selected text. This summary feature is integral to the Writing Tools function.

Notes

In the Notes app, you have the ability to choose the Writing Tools Summary option for highlighted text, analogous to the functionality in Safari. Additionally, summaries are auto-generated for transcribed phone calls and voice memos within the Notes app.

For notes containing recordings, selecting the “Summary” option at the top will provide a transcript synopsis. It’s important to note that phone call recordings, voice memos in notes, and transcripts are universally accessible, with the summary feature being a distinct Apple Knowledge element.

Other Applications

In all apps, you have the option to select text and utilize Writing Tools for generating a summarization of the chosen text, similar to the capabilities in Safari and Notes.

Intelligent Responses are integrated into Mail and Messages, available in the suggestion bar above the keyboard.

These responses are particularly handy when addressing messages with explicit queries, such as “Are you up for watching a movie tonight?” or “Did you catch [popular TV show name] last night?”

Their utility diminishes for other types of responses. Intelligent Responses do not appear to adapt to unique tones or voices, often presenting somewhat robotic suggestions. They frequently use humor or rephrase the original message, which may not align with common human conversational patterns.

Effectiveness of These Functions

Intelligent Responses and other Apple Knowledge attributes are presently in beta, with the upcoming release also slated for beta rollout. While synopses could benefit from enhancement in terms of depth, they already offer practicality, especially for scanning notifications on the Lock Screen or browsing through email communications.

Synopses for lengthier content could improve in detail as presently they solely provide a high-level overview.

Currently, the utility of Intelligent Responses is questionable; however, advancements are anticipated with the impending introduction of personalized Siri features. At this stage, Intelligent Responses may be perceived as more of an inconvenience, given the introductory phase of Apple Knowledge.

Apple Knowledge Prerequisites

To utilize the synopses and smart reply Apple Knowledge features, a compatible device with Apple Knowledge capability is mandatory. This includes the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, any iPhone 16 model, any iPad featuring an M-series chip, and any Mac equipped with an M-series chip.

Due to the complex processing and memory demands, Apple Knowledge attributes are exclusive to specific devices and cannot be accessed on others.

Launch Date

Apple Knowledge is integrated into the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas at present. These betas are accessible to developers and public beta testers, with the official release expected on Monday, October 28.
